Potato cutlets are used widely in north Indian snack dishes – Aloo Tikki/Potato Cutlet as a snack alone is consumed with mint chutney and tomato sauce or other dressings. Otherwise, Potato cutlets are also served with spicy chickpea curry (chole), with onions garnished, tamarind chutney / hot green chutney. That’s Yummy!

Follow below for the ingredients and preparation steps for crunchy and tasty potato cutlets ( Aloo Tikki)!


  • 500 Gm Potato Boiled Mashed

  • 1 Pc Onion Chopped

  • 1/4 Cup Coriander

  • 2 Pc Green Chili Chopped

  • 2 Tbsp Rice Flour

  • 1+1/2 Tbsp Salt (or based on taste)

  • 1 Tsp Lemon Juice

  • 1/3 Tsp Red Chili Powder

  • 1/3 Tsp Garam Masala

  • 1 Pc Brown Bread Whole Wheat/Soaked in Milk


  • Boil the potatoes in a pressure cooker for up to two whistles. Transfer the boiled potatoes into cold water so it’s easy to peel & peel the potatoes.
  • Mash the peeled potatoes with the help of a fork/masher.
  • Into the mashed potato, add 1 small sized chopped onion, 1/4 cup of chopped coriander, 2 pcs of chopped green chilis, 2 tbsp of rice flour, 1+1/2 tsp of salt(or based on taste), 1 tbsp of lemon juice, 1/4 tsp of red chili powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala powder.
  • Take a bread slice and soak it with milk, crush the bread and add it to the mixture – mix it well.
  • Keep the mixture aside for 10 minutes.
  • Spread cooking oil on your palm/gloves and take small portions of the mixture to make a desired shape (circle) for your cutlets.
  • Add 4 tbsp of cooking oil into a frying pan and heat it for 2 minutes on a high – medium flame before adding your cutlets into it for frying. Let it cook/fry for some time.
  • When a side turns golden brown, slowly turn each side to let it cook well.
  • Give equal time on each side, turn multiple times, to get it well cooked.
  • Take out the crispy cutlets into a dry paper towel.
  • Serve them with Ketchup/Green chutney or other dressings of your desire.

  • In this recipe, we shallow fry the cutlet, but you could also deep fry if you want it extra crunchy.
  • Instead of soaking the bread in milk, you could also soak in water if you are lactose intolerant, or if you have a special diet requirement.
  • Use salt based on your taste and diet requirement, although we have used some measurements.
  • Note the recipe is medium spicy, in case of different spice tolerance please use chili accordingly.
