What does ‘masala’ mean?

The definition of masala is a spice mixture that has been ground into a powder or paste used for cooking Indian food or a dish flavored with this powder. A paste made of cumin and other ground spices is an example of masala.

What is the difference between masala and curry?

In general terms, curry refers to a cooked vegetable or meat with spices and salt. On the other hand, masala is a kind of mixed spice used in a curry to add more flavor and taste to it. This is the main difference between the words masala and curry. In this recipe, we are making a gravy masala of chicken.

Are there more ways to make chicken masala?

Definitely. A single dish can be made in many ways. Here we made an Indian-style gravy dish. You can prepare chicken masala in dry or semi-dry ways too. You can leave the gravy in the pan for longer till it evaporates to make it dry.

Ingredients

  • Marinating the chicken
  • 500¬†gm¬†Chicken

  • 1/4¬†tsp¬†Turmeric powder

  • 1/2¬†tsp¬†Red chili powder

  • 1¬†tsp¬†Meat masala

  • 1¬†tsp¬†Salt

  • 4¬†tbsp¬†Curd

  • 1/2¬†tsp¬†Cumin powder

  • Preparing Tomato Pur√©e
  • 1¬†pc¬†Tomato

  • 2¬†pc¬†Green chili

  • 5¬†pc¬†Garlic

  • 1¬†inch¬†Ginger

  • 4¬†pc¬†Almonds

  • Preparing Chicken Masala
  • 3¬†tbsp¬†Cooking oil

  • 2¬†pc¬†Onion

  • 1/4¬†tsp¬†Salt

  • 1/4¬†tsp¬†Turmeric powder

  • 1/2¬†tsp¬†Red chili powder

  • 1¬†tsp¬†Coriander powder

  • 1/2¬†tsp¬†Garam masala

  • 1/2¬†tsp¬†Cumin powder

  • 2¬†tbsp¬†Parsley

Directions

  • Marinating the Chicken
  • Into a bowl take chicken 500 gm, turmeric powder 1/4 tsp, meat masala powder 1 tsp, red chili powder 1/2 tsp, cumin powder 1/2 tsp, salt 1 tsp, curd 4 tbsp – coat the chicken into the spices properly and let it marinate for 30 minutes.
  • Preparing tomato pur√©e
  • Into a blender add chopped tomato 1 pc, green chili 2 pc, ginger 1 pc, garlic 5 cloves, almonds 4 pc – blend it to make tomato pur√©e – keep it aside for later use.
  • Preparing the chicken masala
  • In a heating pot add cooking oil 3 tbsp, chopped onion 2 pc – fry the onions till light brown on medium heat.
  • Add the already prepared tomato puree into it.
  • Add salt 1/4 tsp and cook for 5 minutes on medium heat.
  • Add turmeric powder 1/4 tsp, red chili powder 1/2 tsp, meat masala 1/2 tsp, coriander powder 1 tsp, garam masala powder 1/2 tsp, cumin powder 1/2 tsp and let the spices cook for 3 minutes on medium heat.
  • Add marinated chicken – fry for 5 minutes on medium to high heat.
  • After 5 minutes – make it to low – medium heat and cook for 10 minutes – keep stirring in between.
  • Add water 1/2 cup, cover, and cook for more than 15 minutes on low heat.
  • Finally, add freshly chopped parsley 2 tbsp – switch off the heat and give it a stir.
  • Take out and serve it hot.
